10 Minute Novelists Facebook Group

“[A]n international group devoted to helping time-crunched writers develop the habit of writing, learn the craft, and build their careers in small increments of time.” New members are placed on a seven-day trial period before they can post to familiarize themselves with the group and its rules. The group “ONLY ACCEPTS INDIVIDUAL/PERSONAL accounts” (emphasis theirs); requests to join from a page will be rejected.

Self-promotion posts are not allowed except for a Wednesday #AuthorHappiness thread. Authors will be removed from the group for violating this rule. New releases maybe announced only on the Wednesday #THEPLATFORM thread.

Requests for feedback on blurbs, excerpts, etc., or full critiques may be requested on the Tuesday #BuddyDay thread.

Alpha Betas

The group’s stated purpose is to give self-published authors free, unbiased, third-party reviews—exactly what alpha and beta readers should do.

Reminds authors that the members are busy, so it may take a while for someone to volunteer to read their work. Group members appear willing to read a wide variety of genres and age ranges.

Writing Types: Fiction, nonfiction

Group Offers: Free alpha and beta reads

Aspiring Writers United

Calls itself “A community based around our love for reading, writing, and helping promote aspiring writers!”

As a private group, there’s very little information available to non-member visitors. A “Group highlights” carousel displays questions posted by members and part of one response. The questions appear to be quite basic, as might be expected in a group intended for “aspiring” writers.

No information on whether or how members can request or provide critique or other feedback. Appears to be mostly a discussion and writing advice group. Self-promotion appears to be allowed.

Group Offers: Discussion

Beta Readers & Authors

The purpose of the site is to find beta readers for completed manuscripts. Authors post information about their work (fiction or nonfiction) and interested potential beta readers contact the author via PM.

The group rules say self-promotion is not allowed, yet when I viewed the group, there were several such posts within the first ten.

Beta Readers Group

The “group type” listing says members must be invited or approved by the moderator, but given the group’s size, this doesn’t seem to be a major obstacle. However, only members can view the discussion boards, so potential members have to take a blind leap when joining. The list of rules is quite short but ends with a warning that failing to follow them could result in a ban. This suggests there may be other rules a member won’t know about until they join.

If a member is caught passing AI-generated work as their own will be removed from the group.

Creative Writing Club (#1)

Minimal description about the group and the rules are generic.

Claims to offer “Prompts, networking, story writing, editing, work exchange, fiction, non-fiction”  but there’s minimal discussion among members. At the time of this writing, one member was spamming the group with daily posts of his book covers.

This is a group for creative writing students at Rizal High School in Manila, Philippines.

Group Offers: Writing contests

First Readers (Beta Readers)

Members beta read fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.

The “Beta Reading: What to Expect” article is a good overview for authors who’ve never had their work reviewed by a beta reader.

Writing Types: Fiction, nonfiction, poetry

FREE Critics, beta readers, and critique partners

From what little public information is available, the group appears to be what its name says it is. A carousel of “Group highlights” shows examples of members requesting beta readers, critique partners, or immediate feedback on things like a blurb or elevator pitch. Appears to be open to all types and genres of writing: nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.

KeepWriting

While the sub bills itself as “a community dedicated to motivating writers to stay consistent and constantly grow their craft [by] looking to get feedback on an idea, hear a critique, or get unstuck in a story,” it appears few of the pieces posted actually get much or any critique. Topics, requests for advice, and similar posts get more responses.

Group Offers: Discussion, advice, limited critique
